Bottle Lamp Making Kit Instructions

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. PPE – please make sure before you attempt this project that you have adequate personal protective equipment. Suitable safety glasses, ear defenders and work gloves are essential. Please don’t undertake anything you do not feel entirely comfortable with and seek advice where needed.
  1. Inspect your bottle – check the integrity of your bottle to ensure there are no obvious cracks or chips. Also make sure its empty!
  1. Drilling – Using either a hand drill or bench pilar drill
  • Hand Drill
    • Using a guide is essential to prevent the bit from slipping. Most hardware stores will sell a diamond core bit set with guide like this one here but if you want to save some money just buy a 10mm diamond core bit here and make your own guide from a piece of scrap timber. Just drill a 10mm hole in it! Please note if you buy one of our bits it comes with a small guide as per photo.

  • Top Tip – put a piece of sponge inside the core of the bit and soak in water for a minute. This will lubricate the glass while cutting and ensure not too much excess water is required.

  • Use the guide to start the hole off. Once started remove the guide and drill by hand using a high RPM and a gentle rocking motion
  • Top Tip – Cut the sleeve off an old t-shirt and use it as a sleeve on the bottle to catch any excess water and prevent the labels from getting damaged
  • Slow and steady is the key in particular when you are just about to penetrate to avoid excess chipping.
  • Bench Drill
    • Using the same 10mm diamond core bit as above set your bottle up on the bed and ensure it is clamped tightly. Use a rag under the bottle to catch any excess water. If your drill has a laser line up exactly where you want to drill the hole
    • Top Tip – Cut the sleeve off an old t-shirt and use it as a sleeve on the bottle to catch any excess water and prevent the labels from getting damaged
    • Use the highest setting for RPM on the drill approx. 2500-3000 RPM
    • As you start to see dry white dust add a small bit more water to keep lubricated
    • Slow and steady is the key in particular when you are just about to penetrate to avoid excess chipping.
  1. Cleaning – fill the bottle with water and shake over a basin to remove any chips and dust. Leave to dry overnight if possible. If not use bottle cleaning brushes with a dry rag to clean and dry inside
  1. Cable – Once your bottle is drilled and dry its now time to run your cable through and secure loosely with cord grip. Tape the end of your cable and thread though the drilled hole and up to the neck of the bottle. Put the bottom part of your cord grip on and thread down through the hole. Attach to the top part of your cord grip and tighten loosely. Once through the top of the bottle you can pull trough your lamp holder connection and adjust your bung to the required setting and fit the bung in the top of the bottle.
  1. Wiring
    • Please do not attempt any wiring unless you are 100% comfortable in what you are doing and please make sure the appliance is unplugged from the mains at all times when wiring up.
    • The plug and dimmer switch are pre-wired and tested so all you will have to do is complete the wiring on the lamp holder
    • Live is Brown
      Neutral is Blue
      Earth is yellow/green
